MAPR Observations of a Squall during Nauru99

[MAPR Squall Image, Nauru99]

Observations of a squall line made using MAPR during the Nauru99 field campaign on board the R/V Mirai off the coast of the island of Nauru in the central Pacific. The top panel indicates echo power, the middle panel vertical motion, and the lower panel wind. The purple and black regions in the middle panel correspond to falling rain, the orange and red regions indicate updrafts. Note the wind gusts indicated by the orange and red wind barbs in the lower panel.

MAPR's deployment on the Mirai was the first time a spaced antenna radar had been operated at sea. Preliminary analysis indicates the system operated very well. The radar may have advantages over regular profilers at sea because a measurement may be made within the pitch and roll cycle of the ship.
